OpenAI released on 12 September 2024 a new generative AI model named o1.

Secretly known as Strawberry AI,  the new ChatGPT o1 model - a state-of-the-art reasoning AI model - has generated substantial attention among influencers on social media platform “X” due to its notable advancements in reasoning and problem-solving capabilities from its predecessors.

Influencers have highlighted the o1 model's advancements in multi-step logic, math, science, and coding. They emphasize that o1's capabilities go beyond processing speed, marking the start of a new era in human-AI collaboration with machines better equipped to tackle complex challenges, reveals the Social Media Analytics Platform of GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Shreyasee Majumder, Social Media Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Influencers have shared diverse opinions on OpenAI’s O1 model, reflecting both enthusiasm and concern. Influencers recognize O1's potential to revolutionize AI across various sectors, with a key focus on its capability for chain-of-thought reasoning, which entails a thorough internal thought process before generating responses. Although some acknowledge that o1 is not a complete substitute for existing models, it demonstrates significant strengths in specific areas such as reasoning, problem-solving, and domain expertise, and shows promise in enhancing safety and human-AI collaboration.

“Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the implications of such advanced AI, particularly regarding safety and alignment with human values. Influencers stress the importance of ensuring that the model’s reasoning processes are transparent and ethical.”

Below are a few popular influencer opinions captured by GlobalData’s Social Media Analytics Platform:

  1. Matei Zaharia, CTO & Cofounder at Databricks: “Really cool to see OpenAI o1 launched today. It's another example of the trend towards compound AI systems, not models, getting the best AI results. I'm sure that future versions will not only scale inference, but also use tools (coding, search, etc) for better results.”
  2. Matthew Eash, Investment Research Blogger at HHHYPERGROWTH.COM: “Long-rumored new OpenAI model just dropped. This is their Strawberry (Q*) model in final form, capable of more advanced reasoning and decision-making, stronger in multi-step logic, math, science, and coding.”
  3. Jaroslaw Krolewski, CEO & Founder at Synerise: “OpenAI's O1 model represents a significant leap forward in the evolution of artificial intelligence, particularly in reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. By enabling machines to think more intuitively, it pushes the boundaries of what AI can achieve. This model isn't just about faster processing or better responses; it's about a deeper understanding of complex human challenges…”
  4. Sarbjeet Johal, Founder & CEO at Stackpane: “Breaking: @OpenAI introduces OpenAI o1, a new large language model trained with reinforcement learning to perform complex reasoning. THIS IS THEIR 1st MODEL WHICH ENABLES REASONING. Welcome to more abstraction built-in LLMs models!  o1 thinks before it answers—it can produce a long internal chain of thought before responding to the user says @OpenAI press release…”
  5. Linus Ekenstam, Co-Founder and Designer at Sensive: “OpenAI releases Strawberry o1 is a new series of AI models that are designed to spend more time thinking. These models are great for reasoning harder complex problems in science, coding and math.”
  6. Ethan Mollick, Associate Professor at The Wharton School: “OpenAI’s o1 is also the first specialized frontier model available widely. It doesn’t do everything better than GPT-4o, but it does a few classes of things a lot better. Unless you are doing problems that benefit from planning a solution, you may not see improvement.”
  7. Dan Shipper, Co-founder & CEO at Every: “OpenAI just unlocked a new level of AI reasoning with their new model: o1It's available immediately in @ChatGPTapp and for trusted API users. Key points:  • Ranks 89th percentile on competitive programming • Top 500 in USA Math Olympiad qualifier • Exceeds PhD-level accuracy on physics, biology, chemistry. It was trained to do chain of thought reasoning to increase the accuracy, reliability, and intelligence of its answers. According to OpenAI this should: 1. Improve safety through observable reasoning; 2. Unlock new use cases in science, coding, math; 3. Advance our ability to align AI with human values.”
